Singapore held general elections last Saturday in which a clear victory for the People's Action Party (PAP), which has been in power since the country's independence in 1965, was expected. For the first time, the party contested without a candidate from the Lee dynasty, which has been key in Singapore's radical transformation.
The PAP, led by the country's Prime Minister, obtained nearly 90% of the seats, according to a preliminary count published by the pro-government newspaper The Straits Times. This victory further consolidates the political party's long-standing hold on power in Singapore.
In this election, the population of Singapore had the opportunity to choose their representatives in Parliament, and despite the absence of a candidate from the Lee family, the PAP managed to maintain its dominant position in the country's politics.
"The victory of the People's Action Party in the general elections demonstrates the population's confidence in our management and our vision for the future of Singapore," noted a representative of the PAP after learning the election results.
With this victory, the PAP continues to lead Singapore and shape the political and economic direction of the nation, thereby maintaining its historic presence in power for more than five decades.
